We are a group of writers of noir fiction. Through this manifesto we wish to express our total rejection of the decision to imprison the vice-president of the government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, seven of its ministers and the presidents of Òmnium Cultural and Assemblea Nacional Catalana, Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart.

As writers we are constantly imagining complex plots to entertain our readers and bring to literature critical views of society that come with the genre. We often use the stories we invent to denounce abuses of power, violence as a means to solve conflict, networks of corruption, the exploitation of the weak, arbitrary measures and injustice. This is why we now want to denounce the extremely grave situation of repression being experienced in Catalonia and the arbitrary actions being taken by the Spanish judiciary and government.

The response of the Spanish state to the political conflict in Catalonia has been to unleash undemocratic policies of repression worthy of a dictatorship. We believe that political confrontation must be solved through political debate and the ballot box. The repressive actions of the Spanish government enacted in the form of a dirty war, police violence against the population  and jailing of political leaders are unacceptable in a democratic state.

The signatories of this manifesto have different political perspectives but we share a desire to defend democratic values. We believe that the violation of human rights and freedoms now taking place in Catalonia cannot be justified by appeals to constitutions or laws, and cannot be considered simply internal matters to be settled by the Spanish state within the framework of the European Union, to which we, as European citizens, have surrendered part of our sovereignty. We wish to denounce the serious threats posed to democracy in Spain by a government and judiciary that are using the legal system in a perverse, arbitrary manner in order to lend an appearance of legality to police and judicial actions worthy of a totalitarian state.

Faced by the grave situation of defencelessness Catalonia finds itself in, we make this appeal for international solidarity and demand that the institutions of the European Union immediately intervene to restore the freedom of the imprisoned politicians and condemn and halt the regime of repression the Spanish government has begun to impose in Catalonia.
